Sweetwater Lodge
Sweetwater Lodge not only offers two outstanding private luxury lodges each accommodating two people, but also offers keen birders great opportunities for Bird-watching and Nature Photography. Fall out of bed at the crack of dawn and wander leisurely through the various habitats on offer at our exclusive and expansive property of over 160 acres with walking tracks throughout. No need to drive anywhere! Currently 145 species recorded on the property, but records only recently attained.
Sweetwater has easily accessible walking tracks including through private rainforest up to 500m above sea level. Major habitats on the property include rainforest, riparian, open grassland and woodland. There are also semi-retired fruit orchards. Australian native honey flora gardens are now well established around the lodges, being home to many of the native bird species including several species of Honeyeaters.
Sweetwater boasts good populations of the elusive Blue-faced Parrot Finch, best seen from March to August. Other notable species include the Lesser Sooty Owl, Red-necked Crake, Yellow-breasted Boatbill, Victoria’s Riflebird, Chowchilla and in summer months the Buff-breasted Paradise- Kingfisher.
Sweetwater’s wildlife includes an abundance of agile wallabies, pademelons, platypus, goannas, water dragons, bandicoots, and occasionally the Northern Spotted Quoll, echidnas and swamp wallabies.
The lodges are surrounded by the spectacular Julatten mountain range offering stunning views and wonderful sunsets.
Just 5 minutes drive to the foot of Mt Lewis National Park in Julatten where all species of the Wet Tropics endemics can be found. An easy 1 hour 15 minutes from Cairns International Airport.
We have access to excellent bird guides and we’re happy to arrange guided day tours to suit, both on the property and in the surrounding area. Bird lists, maps, guides and bird books are on hand for all our guests.
